Global NCAP Safety Rating for Hyundai Venue

NCAP Safety Rating for Hyundai Venue

The story of South Korean automaker Hyundai began in 1967 with the establishment of the Hyundai Motor Company. 'Hyundai' is an amalgamation of two Korean words—hyun (modern or present) and dai (generation or era). It took a year for the company’s Ulsan assembly facility, currently the world’s largest integrated automobile manufacturing plant, to be constructed.

In 1968, Hyundai fully assembled Cortina, its first car, in collaboration with Ford Motor Company. However, the launch of the Hyundai Pony, South Korea’s first mass-produced car, in December 1975 propelled the company to soaring success. Since then, Hyundai has achieved various feats, including manufacturing the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, ix35 Fuel Cell, in 2013. Hyundai has several successful products in its portfolio, including the Santro, Accent, Santa Fe, Tucson, IONIQ, Verna, i20, Creta, and Venue.

Hyundai Venue: Launch and Specifications

In 2019, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) launched the Hyundai Venue, a compact SUV. At the time, it came with two transmission and three powertrain options. Its modern, sporty design and various safety features set it apart. In 2023, HMIL launched the new Venue and Venue N-Line with SmartSense (Hyundai’s Advanced Driver Assistance System/ADAS) and a new powertrain. The Hyundai Venue is India’s first and most affordable ADAS-equipped subcompact SUV.

The 2023 Venue is available in three powertrain options:

- a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine (83hp power, 114Nm torque)

- a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine (120hp power, 172Nm torque)

- a 1.5-litre diesel engine (116hp power, 250Nm torque)

Customers can choose between a five-speed manual, six-speed manual, and seven-speed dual-clutch (automatic) transmission (DCT) gearbox. The company also released another edition of the SUV, Venue Knight. This five-door Hyundai SUV is also big on safety features.

Hyundai Venue Safety Features

Hyundai has left no stone unturned in giving the Venue an edge over competitors in the same segment, especially with safety features. The 2023 Venue has numerous advanced safety features like:

- Six airbags (front, side, side curtain)

- Lane keeping assist (LKA)

- Forward collision warning (FCW)

- Leading vehicle departure alert (LVDA)

- Driver attention warning (DAW)

- ISOFIX anchorages

- Hill-assist control (HAC)

- Anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake distribution (EBD)

The Venue also has a seat belt reminder, electronic stability control (ESC), and rear parking sensors. With such a vast bundle of safety features, it’s no surprise that the Hyundai Venue, when tested by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) for safety in 2019, came out with flying colours. Even so, having Hyundai car insurance is necessary for added protection on the road.

Hyundai Venue ANCAP Safety Rating

Independent organisation ANCAP evaluates car safety by conducting various assessments, including crash tests, on safety technologies. They examined the Hyundai Venue in 2019 and gave it a four-star safety rating. Here are details about the Hyundai Venue safety rating:

Adult occupant protection

The adult occupant protection test assesses how safe adult passengers in the car are. The 2019 Hyundai Venue scored 91% (34.9 points out of 38) in adult safety. Below is a rundown of how well the Venue protected the driver and front passenger:

Occupant Feature Protection
Driver Head and neck Good
Chest Adequate
Upper legs Good
Lower legs Adequate
Front passenger Head and neck Good
Chest Good
Upper legs Good
Lower legs Adequate

The 2019 Venue also impressed with an 8/8 score in protecting the driver from side impact. The vehicle’s high-strength steel structure aids in protecting passengers during a crash. Moreover, with several safety features like ESC and ABS with EBD, the Venue is a promising contender in the safe SUV category.

Child occupant protection

The ANCAP child safety test typically uses 6-year-old and 10-year-old child dummies to determine whether a vehicle protects children during a collision. The 2019 Venue scored 81% (40.0 points out of 49) in this category. While the 6-year-old’s neck had adequate protection, the 10-year-old's had poor. All other critical body regions had good protection even during a side impact. Additionally, the Venue has ISOFIX anchorages, allowing for secure attachment of the child seat to the car's structure.

Safety assist test

The ANCAP safety assist test examines the presence and effectiveness of active anti-collision technologies installed in the vehicle. In this department, the 2019 Hyundai Venue secured a decent 62% (8.1 points out of 13), owing to the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system delivering an adequate performance in highway speed scenarios. The AEB system detects potential crashes and applies brakes to prevent or reduce the severity of crashes. Since the 2023 Venue has more advanced safety features, it’s difficult to ascertain whether it would retain this score or perform better in the safety assist test.

Vulnerable road user protection test

This test assesses how safe vulnerable road users like pedestrians and those on two-wheelers are if involved in an accident with this four-wheeler. The ANCAP gave the 2019 Hyundai Venue an average of 62% (29.8 points out of 48). It’s common for compact cars to score lower in this category, and difficult for automakers to change this. In such a scenario, having third party insurance can safeguard the insured car’s driver against third-party liabilities as this will compensate for the damages or losses caused to the victim.

Here is a breakdown of the 2019 Venue’s performance:

- The bonnet offered adequate to good protection to the head of the struck pedestrian

- The base of the windscreen, edges of the bonnet, and stiff windscreen pillars extended poor to marginal protection to the pedestrian’s head

- The pedestrian’s pelvis primarily had marginal protection

- The bumper extended good protection to the pedestrian’s legs

Conclusion

The Hyundai Venue has come a long way since 2019, especially in amping up its safety features, and we eagerly await the announcement of the safety rating of the latest model. While discussing safety, we can’t miss mentioning how essential car insurance is. It offers financial protection in the event of an unfortunate incident involving your vehicle. While Indian laws require a minimum of third-party insurance coverage, we advise getting comprehensive insurance to have protection against third-party liabilities and damages to your four-wheeler due to an unfavourable event.
