What You Should Know About Kia Carnival ANCAP Safety Rating

Global NCAP Safety Rating for Kia Carnival

South Korean carmaker Kia Motors entered the Indian market in 2019 by opening a manufacturing facility in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, and launching the Seltos. Following the success of this compact SUV, Kia launched the Sonet, Carens, and Carnival in the country.

Kia Carnival Launch and Specifications

Kia Motors launched the Carnival (Third-gen) in India in February 2020, making this multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) available in the country for the first time. While the company discontinued the Carnival in June 2023, it’s likely to launch the Carnival (Fourth-gen) in 2024.

The third-gen Carnival housed a 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine producing 197.26bhp and 440Nm and paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission gearbox. The 3-row MPV was available in 6-seater, 7-seater, 8-seater, and 9-seater configurations. Inside, it had an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 8-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and a three-zone climate control system.

Kia Carnival Safety Features

The 2020-2023 Kia Carnival also had various safety features like:

- Six airbags (front, side, side curtain)

- Anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD)

- Seat belt reminder

- Tyre pressure monitor system (TPMS)

- Roll-over mitigation

- Cornering brake control

- Hill assist

- Electronic stability control (ESC)

- ISOFIX anchorages

- Lane support system (LSS)

- Autonomous emergency braking (AEB)

- Emergency lane-keeping (ELK)

An abundance of such safety features helped the Kia Carnival get a high safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). Along with these safety elements, having comprehensive insurance coverage for your Kia car will act as added protection.

Kia Carnival ANCAP Safety Rating

The ANCAP is an independent safety organisation conducting assessments on safety features and technologies of vehicles to evaluate their performance. In 2021, the ANCAP published the Kia Carnival safety rating. Here’s what you need to know about this report:

Adult occupant protection

The adult occupant protection test ascertains how safe adults in the vehicle are during a collision. The ANCAP gave the Kia Carnival an impressive 90% (34.54 points out of 38/five stars) score in adult safety. Below is a breakdown of the adult safety offered during the frontal crash test:

Occupant Feature Protection
Driver Head and neck Good
Chest Good
Upper legs Adequate
Lower legs Adequate
Front passenger Upper legs Adequate
Lower legs Good

However, the front structure of the Carnival could pose a potential low to moderate risk to the occupants during a front collision. The driver’s and rear passenger’s critical body regions had good protection during the full-width frontal crash test, but the neck and chest of the rear passenger were vulnerable. The Carnival offered excellent protection in side impact and slanted pole tests.

Child occupant protection

The child occupant protection test determines how safe children in the car are during a collision. The ANCAP uses dummies representing children aged six and ten years old for this. The Kia Carnival performed well in this ANCAP evaluation, securing an excellent 88% (43.52 points out of 49/five stars). In the frontal offset and side impact tests, the Carnival protected all the critical body parts of the children well. The Kia MPV has lower ISOFIX anchorages and top tether anchorages for all second-row seating positions and the third-row outboard seats. Since there are no top tether and ISOFIX anchorages in the central third-row seats, installing a child seat in this position wasn’t recommended.

Safety assist test

The ANCAP safety assist test assesses the effectiveness of the safety technologies installed in the vehicle. The Kia Carnival received a decent 82% (13.25 points out of 16) in this assessment. Its AEB feature performed well and proved it could avoid or mitigate collisions. The overall performance of the LSS was also good, but in ELK scenarios, the MPV displayed an adequate performance. Additionally, there’s a seat belt reminder in all positions except the central second-row seat.

Vulnerable road user protection test

This test judges how well-protected vulnerable road users like pedestrians and those on two-wheelers are if involved in a collision with the four-wheeler in question. The Kia Carnival scored an average of 68% (36.91 points out of 54) on this test. The ANCAP findings regarding this were:

- the bonnet offered good to adequate protection to the head of the struck pedestrian

- the front of the bonnet and stiff windscreen pillars extended poor to weak protection to the pedestrian’s head

- the pedestrian’s pelvis had good to poor protection

- the bumper protected the pedestrian’s legs well

Additionally, the AEB, which can detect and react to vulnerable road users, performed adequately in pedestrian and cyclist test scenarios. Its performance in most daylight and night-time scenarios was good. However, the AEB didn't react in turning and reverse (AEB backover) scenarios. Considering the outcomes of the vulnerable road user protection test, it is good to have thirdparty car insurance, which will protect you against third-party liabilities arising from unfortunate road incidents.

Conclusion

The Kia Carnival stood out with its brilliant adult and child safety ratings but could do better in the safety assist and vulnerable road user protection tests. This may change with the launch of the Kia Carnival (Fourth-gen). However, a car's safety rating isn’t the only thing you should focus on—you must also have car insurance for financial protection. While the Government of India mandates third-party car insurance, we recommend getting comprehensive insurance for coverage against third-party liabilities and damages to your vehicle. If you plan to purchase the Carnival, don’t forget to get an appropriate Kia car insurance policy.
