The Global New Car Assessment Programme (Global NCAP) is the flagship initiative of Towards Zero Foundation, a UK-based charity. It strives to ensure motor vehicle safety to preserve a safe environment for individuals on the road.

The programme evaluates new cars to determine whether they have adhered to the safety regulations set forth by the UN and its member nations. It accomplishes this by making available the Global NCAP crash test findings.

The Global NCAP was created to improve cooperation between regional NCAP tests and to encourage car crash testing and reporting in developing markets. Since 2014, the Global NCAP has tested frontal safety in crashes of passenger vehicles in India under the ‘Safer Cars for India’ project.

Mahindra Scorpio: A Brief History

The Mahindra Scorpio was a game-changer in the Indian SUV market when it was launched in June 2002. Mahindra invested INR 600 crores and spent three years testing the Scorpio before finally unveiling it to the Indian masses. At the time, the SUV came in petrol and diesel engine options. Over the years, the Scorpio has undergone several changes in its design, features, and capabilities.

Mahindra Scorpio-N: Specifications

In June 2022, Mahindra & Mahindra launched Scorpio-N, the third generation of the revolutionary SUV. The Scorpio-N is still easily recognisable but looks more modern and elegant. It has its characteristic long bonnet and two-box shape but is curvier and smoother. Mahindra also improved the interiors of the Scorpio-N by opting for a rich chocolate brown theme.

The Scorpio-N is still available in two engine options: a 172.45 bhp, 2.2-litre diesel engine capable of generating a maximum torque of 400 Nm or a 203 hp and a 2.0-litre petrol engine producing a maximum torque of 380 Nm. Both variants have the choice of a 6-speed automatic or manual transmission gearbox. The diesel variants of the Scorpio-N also come with 4XPLOR, Mahindra’s 4WD system.

An adult driver or passenger's safety is evaluated using the adult safety assessment protocol. The total score, which is 16, is determined by several factors, including injuries to vital body parts like the head, legs, pelvis, femur, chest, knee, and foot. Extra points are awarded to automobiles for features like the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), seatbelt reminders, etc.

The evaluation of kid safety is conducted using dummies that simulate three and one-and-a-half years of age children. Based on the same bodily parts as the adult, a total score of 49 is assigned. The dummies are seated on ISOFIX bases, on which car seats are affixed for the safety of the children.

In addition to this, pedestrian safety is another factor that Global NCAP considers when assigning points.

Mahindra Scorpio-N Safety Features

The Scorpio-N also has an e-call and SOS switch, vehicle dynamics control, and rollover mitigation (ROM). Considering all these, it's no surprise that the Global New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) gave the SUV a 5-star safety rating.

Global NCAP Mahindra Scorpio-N Safety Rating

Global NCAP is an independent organisation that tests the safety of cars by conducting various assessments, including crash tests. In July 2022, the Global NCAP implemented new, more rigorous crash test protocols. The Global NCAP safety rating of the Scorpio-N created a benchmark in December 2022. This car became the first body-on-frame SUV to achieve a 5-star rating under the new Global NCAP guidelines. The Scorpio-N is also the third Mahindra SUV after the XUV300 and XUV700 to get a 5-star rating.

ADULT OCCUPANT PROTECTION

The GNCAP has thoroughly assessed the Mahindra Scorpio-N for the safety of both adult and child occupants. It secured a 5-star rating in the category of adult occupant protection. It distinguished itself from its SUV contemporaries with a frontal-offset crash test score of 29.25 out of 34.

The vehicle offers competent head and neck protection for both the driver and the passenger. Moreover, the Scorpio-N demonstrated a structurally sound body shell that fully complied with the strict guidelines set forth by the GNCAP.

CHILD OCCUPANT PROTECTION

The Scorpio-N received a score of 28.93 out of 49 in the test for the safety of its young occupants. According to the testing body, I-size anchorages were present to prevent head injuries during frontal impact. In addition, in the event of an accident, the car would be able to shield the child's lower body.

The Mahindra Scorpio-N scored less in the Child Occupant Protection Rating since it does not come with three-point seatbelts for all rear seats in the base variant.

SAFETY ASSIST TEST

The Mahindra Scorpio-N was put to the test as part of the Global NCAP's #SaferCarsForIndia initiative to see if it could lower the likelihood of an accident. The motorcyclist safety test evaluates how well a car can prevent injuries to vulnerable road users like pedestrians, two-wheeler riders, and passengers in an accident.

To help reduce collisions with motorcycles and other vulnerable road users, the Scorpio-N is fitted with systems like hill-assist control, which enhances braking and grip on inclines, and electronic stability control, which preserves traction and keeps the car steady on abrupt curves.
