What Are the Different Types of Car Rims?

Car wheels are the part of the vehicle that makes your car literally move on! The tyre put onto the wheel is supported and sealed firmly by the wheel rim. It is the cylindrical outer edge of the wheel. Rim, apart from having this important functional role, is also a critical factor adding appeal to the vehicle. This structure determines how well the car runs on the road.

The car manufacturing companies spend a huge sum every year on the development and manufacturing of stronger and lighter wheels. For this reason, different types of rims for a car are available. Car rims made of different metals are launched in the market.

Different Types of Car Rims

• Spoke-based wheel rims- These were the traditional spoke wheels, which was a concept inspired by the older horse carriages and bicycles. With time, spoke wheel rims have completely disappeared and are only found in vintage cars, generally those that were manufactured before the First World War. They could only mount tyres with tubes.

• Steel rims - These are the mass-production alternative to older spoke-based rims and are currently the most widely used type of car rims. They are very durable and extremely affordable. They are also very easy to repair and if bent can be brought back to good shape. They are cheap enough that you can repair or replace them out of pocket without claiming insurance amount and losing NCB in car insurance.

• Alloy wheel car rims: These are the new types of car wheel rims. These are not made of steel but of a mix of different metals called an alloy, hence the name alloy wheel rims. They are lighter than steel rims and make the car more fuel-efficient. They can also be made in many designs and thus improve a car's looks considerably. On the flip side, they cost a lot and tend to bend easily if you drive rashly on rough roads. Once bent, it’s nearly impossible to repair them.

Conclusion

All in all, steel wheel rims are the best choice for most people who use a car only as a mode of transport. Cars used to have spoked wheels in the past. Nonetheless, split wheels have recently been developed by manufacturers for high-performance tires and automobiles. This will ensure safe driving in tough terrains. Even so, the need for car insurance for your vehicle’s safety must not be forgotten.
