Medical Insurance Benefits For Rajasthan Athletes
Medical Insurance Benefits For Rajasthan Athletes

While the Indian athletes try their best to win medals for the country in prestigious tournaments, the results often don’t go in their favour. This raises the question of what the government is doing for our athletes to ensure they get optimum support to perform and win at the highest level. A good example of the efforts made in the right direction is the Rajasthan Sports Policy 2024. It is designed to promote and nurture sports talent in India's Desert State. One of its key components is the provision of medical insurance for athletes, underscoring the government's commitment to the holistic well-being of sportspersons. Let’s learn more about it.
Understanding Rajasthan Sports Policy 2024
Rajasthan Sports Policy 2024, which will replace Sports Policy 2013, aims to identify priority sports based on `high participation, past performance, and raw talent in both Olympic and non-Olympic sports’. The government has suggested three categories – Priority I, Priority II, and Priority III. The game of cricket, which has a huge popularity in India, has not been identified as a priority sport in Rajasthan.
Features of Rajasthan Sports Policy 2024
The key features of the new policy are –
• Monthly pension of INR 20,000 for international athletes, para-athletes, and coaches. But they should not be employed in any government organisation or receive a pension from the government.
• Medical insurance of INR 10 lakhs for international athletes and INR 5 lakhs for national athletes.
• Felicitation for outstanding sportspersons, best-performing sports associations, private coaches, sports journalists, technical officials, technical staff, and ground staff.
Medical insurance for athletes
As per the new Sports Policy, the Rajasthan government will provide medical insurance to athletes who represent the state of Rajasthan in national games or competitions which are recognised by the IOA and those who are trained in sports academies, High-Performance Centre, and Centre of Excellence. The policy will cover basic medical needs, those specific to sports, rehabilitation, and physical therapy. Athletes will also be covered for pre-existing medical conditions and injuries developed during their sporting career. For international athletes, the Mediclaim policy will have a sum insured of INR 10 lakhs, and for national athletes, it is INR 5 lakhs.
Conclusion
Athletics and injuries go hand-in-hand. If the injuries are severe requiring prolonged treatment, it can be a substantial financial burden for the athlete in terms of medical expenses and loss of income. The Rajasthan Sports Policy 2024, ready to be rolled out, is a step in the right direction as it aims to provide health insurance coverage to its players. Sportspersons can now heave a sigh of relief and need not worry about the financial risks associated with injuries and disabilities.
